Hi everyone, Where the best place is to pickup the following on a 999? RPM Speed +12v Ground I've got a GPCrono combined gear + rev shift light indicator to install and wondering if the best place is to splice into the loom that goes into the dash.
Thanks! Any idea what colour the wires are for each of these outputs on the loom that goes to the dash?
The 999 uses CanBus to communicate with dash so you will not find any speed/rpm outputs. You can use the coil wiring to get an RPM output. Read this article I wrote https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/innovate-lm-2-project.15457/
Thanks @chrisw ! So basically: RPM: Pin 3 on the vertical cylinder coil Speed: Green from the rear wheel speed sensor OR ECU (not CANBUS ?) +12v: Any red wire o «ve on the battery Ground: Chassis For 1) and 2) can not pick up the inputs to the ECU instead ? This would make wiring easier as I would splice the loom that goes to the ECU.
The green wire from the speed sensor goes to Pin 34 Body on ECU. That should give the variable voltage linked to speed.
Almost 2 years later and I'm finally getting round to doing the install! As I like to do things neatly, I bought a pack of assorted superseal connectors and have made two inline harnesses which I'll then splice/bleed the gear/rev indicator wiring loom onto. This saves me splicing into the original wiring loom. Pick-ups are: +ve: Rear brake light switch from the m/c -ve: Battery negative terminal Speed: Green wire from the rear wheel speed sensor RPM: Will probably be from the vertical coil Now to make it 100% as I'd like it, I ideally need a male and female 3pin coil plug. Problem is the only way I managed to find a compatible female coil plug was from an OEM harness... Will probably end up splicing/bleeding onto the coil wire. Any suggestions?
Actually I might be extravagant and get a used 848 ignition coil which includes the pigtail and splice into that instead @chrisw Are 848 and Gen1 999 coils interchangeable ?
Only just got round to doing the ignition coil pickup (3 month old baby - don’t have much time to spare!) and I’m not 100% sure I tapped into the correct wire on the 848 coil pigtail. It’s supposed to be pin 3 and I tapped into the red wire on the vertical 848 coil. Can’t seem to calibrate the gears as it expects >3000rpm and I think it’s not picking up anything. Before I go on a long troubleshooting stint, does anyone know what colour the pin 3 wire is?
If you look where the wires enter the connector (bottom side). The plastic has the PIN numbers showing. 1 - yellow 2 - black 3 - red Pin 3 goes to the ECU and should give the frequency of the coil trigger.
Then I did wire it up correctly…. Wonder if it’s the speed sensor, I used the green wire from the speedo pickup.
No wait….my fault ;/ Used the wire for the spark plug pickup and not the ECU coil pickup….what a fool!
I switched the (from the wiring diagram) yellow and orange terminals on the plug which was easier than soldering on the correct colour wire but still no joy :-( I'm sort of convinced its the RPM signal which isn't playing nice with the gear indicator so I hooked up the multimeter and on the pin 3 coming off the coil I'm getting: +7.5v with the ignition on but engine off +13,4v with the engine on and idling If I hold it above idle the value (+13.4v) barely changes if at all. I would expect to see a pulsed (+ve variation) signal from the ECU.
Would there be anything off about how the ECU sends its signal to the coils? I ask because the Healtech lap timer says to pick up the RPM signal from the crank position sensor. Mine isn’t a Healtech but it might be expecting the same sort of signal.
I can only comment about the Innovate LM2 being able to get RPM signals from that circuit. Could it be that you are only getting half of the signal ie front coil not both coils? Would the CPS signal work? @Derek
Not sure but before splicing into that (I made an intercept for the other stuff) I want to see if the manufacturer says anything.
