748 Max Rpm?

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Coda, Mar 27, 2023.

  1. According to the SM the standard 748 Bip maxes out at 11,500 rpm.

My 748 revs to about 13,000.

What’s the likely reason for the discrepancy? A faulty RPM gauge? Wrong data in the SM? Limit set higher on the EPROM?

    Need I worry?

  2. Most likely a faulty gauge. I can't think of any one wanting to set the rev limit beyond 11.5 unless for a race bike.
You will see a massive increase in rocker/cam wear if you are spending a lot of time at that rpm.
I'd be inclined to check it with another tacho

  3. gauge over reading for sure, but as posted by Chris, the show's over by 11,500rpm

  4. My 748 R revs to 11k and the RS to 12k.
They both get a change of oil and filter every 200 miles and belts, shims and rockers checked every 500 miles.

  5. Did you miss a zero off those numbers?

  6. Noop.
    Track only.
    :D

  7. Nope he didn’t ;)

Re op question, I’d check the counter as if it’s not over reading it won’t last long…I had a mate have a 998r built to an RS by Motorapido. He asked for them to remove the limiter as he was having some mapping done and it would be sorted then.
Alas he forgot. It didn’t last long and didn’t end well. Iirc the build cost the was over 5k (maybe 17 years ago??) and the rebuild cost substantially more…

  8. There is a limiter in place, I think it’s nearer 14k as indicated, I’ve gotta look at the cam footage to verify. It’s almost defo the counter. I’m trying to cook up a scheme to measure it with some other equipment.

  9. After adjusting the Tacho, it now hits the limiter at 11.5.
