Intermittent Error On Dash When Riding

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Jackyboyhyper, Mar 17, 2025.

  1. I've been having 'errors' display on the dash intermittently when riding. Looking online, people are saying they have replaced the throttle assembly. But other symptoms they had was bike had gone into limp mode. I've not got that.

I know i currently have the clutch micro switch removed and bypassed. So I will look into resolving that issue (mainly so I can start in 1st should I happen to stall) but if this was an issue I'd of thought the error would stay on the dash constantly?

Could my throttle position sensor be on the way out and maybe I could replace the throttle assembly unit now rather than waiting.

Does anyone have other ideas as to what it could be? It's vague I know, not a lot to go on.

  2. What year/model Hyper?

  3. 2015 821, hyperstrada

  4. :( Has it had the anti electronic surge update done? And the coils changed?
if you remove the front nose fairing and the dash you’ll see if it’s been done, there’ll be a small black box behind the dash about 1” x 1” x 1/2”. Or, with any luck it may even be noted in any service history you have.

  5. Also, what errors?

  6. Coils are still original, which I'm looking to replace with eldor from an 848 I think.

No info on my service book about recalls being done, just the normal service info.

I have had the nose cone off but do not remember a black box there. I think it's only 4 bolts so will check again.

Do you think this could be the ecu about to be fried?

  7. I couldn't tell you what error. It only appears when I'm riding and seems to come on and off while doing do. No error in the garage with ignition on. No code or anything

  8. It is a possibility. Certainly if the fix has not been done do it. It’s quite easy. The part you need is under £20. The coils are the most expensive part at c£100 each. By doing it, at the very least you’ll prevent it happening and save yourself the £350 repair fee for the dash. I’ll dig out the part numbers and instructions and share them later.

  9. Much appreciated thank you, I was planning on doing the coils over winter while I do valves and belts but perhaps I should just do it now.

Any thoughts on it being the throttle assembly? I'm tempted to buy a jetprime set up rather than buying oem as people have said the issue came back after new throttle assembly installed with oem

  10. I've just read through the can bus thread you replied in with the information on the unit that goes behind the dash :upyeah:
Is that unit absolutely necessary if the eldor coils are fit?

From reading through a lot of the info regarded Xmas tree dash it all stems from the beru coils and that the unit behind the dash was a cheap work around from ducati that ended up not actually solving anything?

Either way, I'll do the eldor coils as that's a ticking time bomb. And while I'm there I'll replace the throttle assembly as that may also be what's causing the error while riding.

  11. im glad you found it, I thought perhaps I’d written it but not posted it as I couldn’t find it. Can you point me too it please? I’ll bookmark it for the future.

For the relatively low cost of the anti-spike device and its relative ease of install I’d do it. Certainly, if it were a customer’s bike, and I’ve done 2 in the past 12 months, I’d insist on fitting it as well as ordering the coils from an 848; I wouldn’t want it to come back and bite me in the future.

Certainly the current coils Ducati sell for the Hyper range, whilst on their 2nd or 3rd iteration, are Beru ones and not Eldor. However, as the problem is well known, I trust Ducati (and MAE, the manufacturer of the dash) enough to believe there’s more to it than just using different coils. If that were the case I’m sure Ducati would have dropped the fix from their parts range and dropped the Beru coils and just told dealers and the public at large to fit the Eldor coils off the 848. I suspect, as it’s MAE (who make the dash) who provide the fix that MAE may very well be aware the pcb board within their dash doesn’t contain sufficient voltage spike protection, and yes you may still get a voltage spike across the canbus from the Eldor coils although perhaps not as severe as with the Beru. All just hypothesis & conjecture though on my part.

  12. I’m still interested to know what error message is appearing when it does?

Unfortunately all i can say is that 'error' appears on the dash next to the temp gauge a long with the engine light next to neutral. Where my thumb is pointed to in the image.

It comes and goes as I'm riding and doesn't appear when I turn the electrics on

I shall do coils and black box behind dash :upyeah:

  14. I'm assuming that the mention of 'throttle' here means the fbw twist-grip assembly??

  15. Yes it does, reading up on the issue online the unit is replaced, if I'm reading it right something to do with the throttle position sensor doesn't work and the unit needs replacing

Good news @West Cork Paul I've just checked the head unit and the little box with that part number is installed.

  16. :upyeah::upyeah:
If you go into the Settings Menu you can scroll to Errors and it should list anything there.

Good news on your anti-spike retro fit being done :upyeah:

  17. I shall have a look in the morning, but I'm sure you can only view errors if the error is active. As my error seems to be intermittent while riding I'll probably have to try and view it next time I ride.

  18. Reading up online about spark plugs looking like this, it could throw an engine light. Could be what's causing my intermittent error on the dash, although I don't know if that's specific to my model or just cars perhaps. We'll see with the new spark plugs and eldor coils now fitted, once I run the bike

  19. A faulty, or failing, spark plug will only throw an error if the engine has knock sensors fitted. Even then it’s not the spark plug throwing the error but the knock sensor picking up and reporting a misfire. I haven’t checked the parts diag but I’m confident there are no knock sensors on your engine.

The plug itself is ‘dumb’ it doesn’t feed any signal back to the ECU. That plug isn’t the cause of your EML. It won’t hurt to fit a new plug though now it’s out. NGK MAR9A-J is the correct plug for your bike.

  20. cant say for ducati but i have seen this back in my fiat days. incorrect plugs, or even a mismatch in age/millage of plugs would throw up all sorts of CAN and component errors. often injector circuit errors on the 2.4's . and could even cause the car to cut out on the smaller capacity fiats that used the same ecu's as ducati until either the errors were deleted or battery disconnected and then reconnected. i had one vehicle that took me an age to diagnose due to assuming it had been done properly elsewhere, you could draw a line on the road where it would cut out after resetting. it had two new plugs of one make, and two old of another.
