Just wondered has anyone fitted a lighter lithium battery to your multi with a higher cranking output for better engine starting and if so was it better than standard battery?
Yes, I fitted one and no it didn’t make much difference. I think the uprated cables (e.g. exact fit/ccw) are supposed to give the best improvements on starting but I have no personal experience of them.
Indeed, you can upgrade to higher gauge cables which can help with starting, or so I've heard but I've personally not had issues with starting on my previous or current Multistrada. As for the lithium battery, I've had one installed for a while now and have not had any issues at all. I don't treat it any differently than a normal battery (bike is stored in a closed garage) with the usual trickle charge over winter if needed. The weight saving is pretty big, which was my draw to the upgrade.
This subject has been discussed a number of times on here, and particularly the safety aspects, as a search will no doubt show. The link below provides one example of members views: https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/battery-replacement-suggestions.62276/ . I am informed that it is wise to check that the bike charging circuit is suitable for operating with a non-standard battery. Hope it helps. Tom.
I might also add - I changed back to AGM this weekend after having intermittent voltage drops on the rear skyhook suspension, this could be for a number of factors and there is no indication whatsoever the battery is the cause, but I am operating an extended process of elimination. The weight difference is noticeable even if the starting isn’t.
Not related entirely to the Lithium battery question of the OP. I recently changed the battery on my car, a mk2 Tiguan. This had been suffering a number of reported errors for some time; parking sensors, glow plug module, vauge DSG gearbox issue. Less than great starting prompted the new battery a couple of months ago. Had to program the car with VCDS to change from the 8 year old OEM Varta to the new Yuasa. Blow me down with a feather but all the other issues, aside from the glow plug module (now replaced) disappeared. Only downside is the stop/start has now begun functioning again, something that maybe useful in heavily congested traffic which I rarely encounter but it's an annoyance at T junctions.
When you say ‘standard battery’, are you referring to the lead acid battery fitted from new ? I have fitted a lithium chemistry battery to my track Multistrada but that is more to do with weight saving. When the bike was built, the workshop went through and cleaned up the starter cable terminations and the earth which, IMO, made a bigger difference to starting. The current generation lead acid AGM battery is probably the best of the lead acid chemistry batteries which, IMO, is more than adequate for a Multistrada. Andy
I changed to a li-ion battery about 3 years back, mated it to a dedicated Li-ion trickle charge unit and I've had no issues. I do feel it has more grunt kicking over the engine but that could have just been because the old battery was on it's last legs anyway. Bike has lots of the usual touring junk;wired in satnav, radio, spotlights.
This is a great accessory for anyone with a lithium battery (or pretty much any moto battery) https://www.antigravitybatteries-uk.co.uk/battery-protection/bluetooth-battery-tracker-plus.html
