Hello . Need to ask a question that I can't seem to find the answer to , Hope someone hear can help . Can a 3 phase reg/rectifier be used on a 2 phase ?. I have a 916 with the two yellow wires and a think it's had its day .
yes it can, but memory shot @Derek @chrisw will remember i think plus searches on this forum will also reveal the answers you are looking for (v. lucky escape by the way!) - often the connector(s) failing due to corrosion/inability to allow current to flow without overheating, are as much to blame for the breakdown rather than just the rectifier - ditto alternator connectors.
Just connect two of the wires (the third becomes redundant). Would be worthwhile upgrading to a mosfet R/R https://ebay.us/m/ZUq4RM https://ebay.us/m/NlFLPi
I replaced the wires all the way back to the stator with 2.5mm squared. The stator can't take a thicker gauge. I also got rid of the troublesome connector and used a new R/R with larger spade connectors like the Shindengen has. Any 2 of the 3 R/R connections work with a single phase alternator.
Thanks chrisw , Chris , 98sps ,petsmith . Question for chrisw . If I purchase the rectifier in your link which wires go where? Bought 10agw cable and cut the old back to the stator already soldered . Just bought a second hand r/r but it had 3 yellows so that's where I'm at. I may do the yellow redundant thing . Then upgrade it to a MOSFET over the winter. Thanks guys
The grey connector has 3 connectors - for the yellow stator wires The black connector has 2 connectors (the one nearest the grey one is +ve) - to the battery
Where I learnt all about Mosfet R/R mods, long before Triumph did the recall to replace all the 675 R/Rs.
