The first two were new , the PP had 4k on it. It has always burnt a bit of oil , however it has increased over the years. When new to me it used about 250 ml on a 2500 trip to Austria. Just got back from Spain circa 1800 miles and it used a litre. It gets a bit sutty on the end of the termi but it always has. I guess not having it since new makes it inconclusive about the running in process having an affect , though AI explanation does mention the remaking in procedure could have an effect. I am convinced that the spirited riding up and down the box is where mine likes to use it. I’ve registered use on motorways and it’s not using it doing that. The question is how do I fix it …
If it helps, my current 1260 is second hand and consumes oil, my previous 1260 was brand new and I followed the usual break in period steps (within reason) and that also consumed oil. So I doubt the breakin has much, if anything to do with long term oil consumption. I really do think it's related to the contextual conditions on a per ride basis rather than 'this model does x, that model does y'.
This is what it looks like now after 2604 km. Does anyone happen to know how much oil goes between the max and min marks?
My 2015 DVT absolutely drinks oil. 28k Had awful service history by previous owners. Said belts had been done but they hadn’t. It was in a state.
Just completed 2500 mile European trip. My 1260 Pikes Peak Multi drank one litre of oil. Mixture of maybe 25% autoroute/autobhann/autostrada and 75% twisties/cross country routes on A and B road equivalents. Forgetting to put the oil filler back on after a top up maybe spat a little of that out Had to whittle a temporary replacement.
Bike: 2019 1260 PP - solo rider with top box/roll bag/tank bag Just returned from a 2,294 mile trip to France/Spain. 90% riding on super smooth minor fast / twisty roads in a spirited fashion (as this bike doesn't like going slow ). Plenty of gear changes in the Pyrenees (French & Spanish sides) of course. I made sure oil level was at the upper mark prior to departure & kept an eye on the level throughout the trip. In total had to top up with 500ml oil. My reserve oil that I took with me leaked (thankfully it was in a bag) so had to source oil and couldn't find the recommended Shell oil (crap bottle in my opinion as it has no integrated spout ) so found a bike shop in Saint Girons (courtesy of the hosts of the hotel I was staying at) and managed to get some fully synthetic Liqui Moly 15w 50 oil (bottle has an excellent integrated spout & didn't leak). FYI - the shop is Motoshop 09, 30 Av. Rene Plaisant, 09200, Saint Girons, France. Lovely people & super helpful; closed on Sun & Mon. This was my 1st big trip on the MS & I absolutely loved it; however....the oil consumption is the highest on any bike I've owned so that's a bit disappointing but now that I know this I'll take appropriate action for future trips. From the more experienced owners of this specific bike.....do you stick with the Shell oil, or have you found an equal/better alternative & a 1L bottle with an integrated spout?
Gasket was a bit goosed under the front guard so had a slight leak which was costing me some oil. Now it’s fixed will be interesting to see if the oil level stabilises.
I used Motul for a while now back on Shell as it's slightly less expensive. I have tried only filling it to the mid line to see if that helps, it appears to but it would need a far more scientific trial to prove it.
