So what have you done today..?

  1. This was Carole Nash the broker and Carole Nash 2 was really KTM insurance. I thought that I was doing the right thing by insuring a KTM through KTM Insurance, with Carole as the broker. Clearly not.

  2. You never said you were a hairdresser :)

    Just a reminder.

And since I got a nuke for my post about the batteries, though I expect it was fat fingers.

  5. Mate, it’s not unusual for threads which even merely touch upon, never mind concentrate on, the use of lithium batteries on old Ducatis, to escalate to death threats and even (IIRC) banishment from the forum, so a “nuke” is well within the range of expected responses.

  6. Apart from an incredulous "really?" I feel bound to observe that those are lead-acid anyway. Just in suspension in a fibreglass mat - so, eg, the 999 battery can stand on end.

  7. After further review, consulting VAR, DRS and the 3rd umpire, I think the death threats may have been on the old pre-TWO Visordown forum and in relation to the use or otherwise of daytime running lights and/or hi viz. However, there have been quite a few very heated threads on here about the use of lithium batteries on old Ducatis and in particular their propensity to enter a state of thermal runaway (aka “catching fire”) one of which resulted, IIRC, in someone being banned or suspended.

I probably thought you were straying from the path of the righteous man by using them on those bikes, as I think the suffix “ium” from the word “Iridium” on the box next to the batteries must have subliminally planted that idea in my brain.

  8. Yeah, I get the idea they don't spontaneously combust so much anymore, but I'm never going to entirely trust them. And I don't see that much point in having them on a bike, other than tech snobbery. Electric bikes excepted of course - but I'm happy with high compression not-quite explosions that make nice loud bangs.

  9. In Sainsbury's car park was a van belonging to 'Moto Vation Racing'.

@Bumpkin Do they enter their own bikes?

  10. Ah yes, the posh plugs I got for the 999 and suspect I'll never use. I probably subconsciously thought they'd be iridescent.

  11. Got the results of my blood test and my kidney function is ‘normal’ and my PSA is also ‘normal’. Hoorah :D The doctor still wants to stick her finger up my bum for a rummage around but there’s no urgency on that for now. Also went to see a new dentist to get a second opinion on what to do with a broken tooth. My wallet initially had a sigh of relief because it doesn’t need a crown but he found 3 old fillings are cracked and need attention, that my old and now ex dentist didn’t find when I saw him in August. Wallet now having palpitations, initial consultation, 4 fillings and the hygienist, £850. Andy

  13. Looked to buy some concert tickets; on getting onto the site I find that the band have partnered with PLUS1 and as a consequence there will be an additional fee on my ticket which will go towards providing humanitarian aid.

Whilst I’m not necessarily opposed to the provision of humanitarian aid, I do object to being held to ransom to provide it by a band with no say as to where it goes. And I object even more that only 83% of the money being added to my ticket will go as aid, the remaining 17% presumably going to “admin costs”.

  14. Don't think so, not sure if Tim has ever actually raced himself. Maybe he's supported a few racers in his time. Certainly works on some track bikes for customers.

  15. What band?

I imagine that the band could have simply raised their ticket price and subsequently donated (your money) directly, but the taxation would have been higher as they aren't a registered charity?

  16. When I went with my son to watch the Wardley v. Parker fight at the O2, all the bogus handling, facility and admin fees (what handing or admin, it's done by computer over the internet?) came to £40. Plus, the information on the website made it seem as if you had to pay if you booked car parking in advance but was free if you just turned up and parked on the day, when in fact it was the other way round. So that was another £40, although for some reason the machine only took £11 off my debit card. Greedy grifting cunts (O2, not the boxers, who earned every penny of their purse).

The sum itself wasn’t excessive, I just have an issue with the principle that if you want the ticket you will pay this.

Some lovers of the Kraut got upset, so I will elaborate: Experience One: About twenty years ago, we wanted to buy a people carrier and test drove a VW Sharon. Down the M4 on a hot Summer day. Not only did the A/C not work but neither did the fan. With the windblast from open Windows at just 60 mph, you could not even hear the person sitting next to you. When I got back and told that the car was shit, I get told off for not appreciating the quality of the German brand. "For Fucks Sake! It is broken already!!!" So I bought a Ford Galaxy that was perfect. A bit heavy on petrol but it was a three litre automatic, but very good to drive!

And then, when my Ford B-Max offended somebody enough for them to smash into it, I was lent a 73 VW eSport that was supposed to be a like-for-like replacement for my Ford, whilst it was being repaired. That was a pile of shit to rival all known piles of shit. In line with normal VW experience, very little worked and they only thing that did was the stop/start that got super-offended if you used the handbrake rather than always rely on the footbrake when stationery - which is technically wrong and get you failed on a driving test.

In the end, I gave it back early as having nothing was more enjoyable.

Based upon those experiences, why would I think any differently about German brands, although it might just be VW. But since every Ford that I've had, has been good, together with Toyotas and Mazdas and experience of Hondas, why would I feel like playing with anything German?

  19. Hi Perry,

So much of what you say is spot on and typical of so many peoples experiences. I have had many Fords, Vauxhalls, Toyotas, Hyundai's and other run of the mill stuff in my lifetime. The shorts and long of it is that vthere really isn't a bad car on the road these days.

I have been very fortunate to have owned a few high end German cars and I have to say that at that level they are way beyond other manufacturers in terms of quality and driving experience. I accept that they are not cheap but the driving experience is quite exceptional. I currently own a BMW, Mercedes and Audi and hate all of the manufacturers with a passion but when I get in my Merc or BMW there is nothing to beat it for quality of drive.

Should you ever get the chance or opportunity to own a high end German car you will be blown away. I've had BMW 1 series and Mercedes A classes but as you say they are just living off the marque of the high end vehicles but are no better than the cheapest everyday cars available.
