Yesterday I managed a second metric century during February. This car had fallen victim to SSEN works where the safety fencing had floated away. 69 miles, masses of flooded roads.
Went for a ride Tuesday afternoon. C26 miles. Took a couple of wrong turns had an interesting diversion. Now I know where I’m going did same ride today -bit faster. Still took a wrong turn though , but a different wrong turn…. It’s interesting what ‘ stuff’ you encounter on these smaller road rides. Things like canals off shoots and today, smaller railway line -as per photo. Also came across River Yeo which looks like it’s seen some decent flows of water in past couple of months. Trundled over the M5 ( twice) -unusually flowing quite well for a Friday. I’m glad I’m not one of those commuting home on a Friday afternoon. I did do today’s ride at a quicker average pace - I might do the same ride again next week. Might try for a bit quicker again. I might even try and go the right way !!!
Chickened out of cycling through this puddle. Walked round. Cycled through the next one -came within a gnats whisker of coming a cropper….!
I’ve started my LEJOG training, I’ve started working with an endurance strength trainer specialising in over 30 yo. By the time I set off I will be 62.
Yesterday, I caught the train down to Exeter to meet and cycle with our youngest daughter. Due to a signalling issue my train arrived late. I’m about to try delay repay. We used a route that Harvey Cycling from YouTube and Strava had previously done. It took us a while to find it, but once we had what a stunning route, a few spiky hills, including one 16%. Unfortunately I picked up a slight niggle in my right knee, which only hurts when climbing. It didn’t stop me yesterday, but I have shelved today’s metric century. Sadly I missed my train by a few minutes so had to wait an hour for the next.
Just managed to get my March metric century ride in yesterday, it was cold, wet at times and windy. Completely different from last weeks ride around Devon. Bib longs, base layer, winter socks and jersey, long fingered gloves and waterproof jacket for the return leg. Bike has an annoying squeak so off to the LBS
Annoying squeak turned out to be a sticky piston. I was grateful for the LBS fixed it while I waited, so I bought a couple of things.
Interesting news—has MIPS been surpassed? https://www.cyclingweekly.com/produ...ginia-tech-helmet-labs-best-ever-safety-score
Both my daughter and myself have hit our heads on the road surface in the last 2 years and now use Giro MIPS helmets. We only changed because of the impact, Im not sure how often they should be replaced I’d thought much like motorbike helmets.
Manufacturers advise us to replace our (cycle) helmets every 3-5 years. But they would, wouldn’t they? However, I’ll get a new helmet every few years—or sooner if Virginia Tech tests show that a new one has significantly better protection. Despite aero mattering to me for age-group racing, I’ll pick protection over speed every time. I, too, took helmet protection seriously only after a car hit me.
I emailed Pikio and asked where can the SI be purchased in the U.K., they replied “Thank you for reaching out and for your interest in the PIKIO helmet. Currently, we are only set up to ship within Canada and the USA as our helmet is certified under the North American CPSC standard. We are actively working on obtaining the EN1078 certification needed for sale in Europe. We would be happy to notify you personally as soon as we are able to ship to the UK. Please feel free to also subscribe on our website to stay updated on our progress.” I don’t currently need a new lid, but I will next year, unless it gets damaged before.
Yesterday as part of my LEJOG training I had to ride for 6 hours, I left home about 1000 got in about 1730, although I stopped for lunch at Pronto bikes in Frome, my uncle & Aunts and a mid afternoon at Mere coop for a sandwich & banana. Riding time was 6hrs and 1 minute 69.53 miles, 3,517 ft.
I have posted the following on a cycling forum, but generally they aren’t that helpful. First of all I’m very pleased with the electronic changing of both Di2 and AXS Rival. I’ve experienced far less problems since ive been running Di2 with my road bike and now having upgraded my gravel bike from Apex 1 x to Rival 2 x. I’m sure any shortcomings are my own ineptitude rather than the system. I havent used my road bike this year and may not until after my LEJOG finishes in June. Yesterday about 3 miles into my scheduled 63 mile ride my Garmin 1030 plus advised both gear changers batteries were low on the SRAM AXS. I carry one spare CR2032, but have never changed one whilst out on the road and completed the ride without needing to change the batteries. This morning I thought before I change the batteries I’d just check the AXS app, which said the batteries were good but I needed four updates. I fumbled my way through that process and now my levers don’t show on the component list. They are on another screen that says they aren’t connected. I’ve attempted to google and youtube to find a fix but drawn a blank. Can anyone on here offer any constructive advice ? Thanks
