Today, I was headed to the UK and on the bike for the first time in months. Well, just before I got to Belgium, it suddenly threw DSS error and the fuel range vanished from existence. I've previously replaced the fuel sender unit which solved this. Having it come back a year later concerns me, is it possible another unit has failed? It was sat idle for almost a year... It runs and felt fine, but I didn't want to risk it so I've just got home and cancelled the trip. Any ideas? I'll be headed to the stealership tomorrow to see if they can read the codes
After some digging, it seems to also be related to the accelerometer sensors. I'll take the tank off tomorrow and give all connections a clean, outside of that, nothing is visibly worn or damaged for said sensors...
https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/dss-and-fuel-sender-fault.62122/page-2#post-1133999 Well, shit. The cable was very much tucked away and this is something I've never touched or even looked at, I've had the seat on and off many, many times though so it lines up with the linked post.
Indeed, time for a cuppa and a think. In the linked thread, there were a lot of comments with a couple of reference pictures of others claiming the cable was not placed correctly to cause this. If you look at the same cable in the other images, you'll see it tucks against the plastic and down, it routes around the back of the unit against the plastic. I assume this is going to be the same on other bikes, it's certainly worth untucking the cable to check.
Yes that was mine, luckily they replaced the shock under warranty, I’m pretty sure it was something they did as I’d only had the bike serviced recently.
Sadly not an option for me, I'm going to attempt repairing the wiring and go from there. Fingers crossed!
Red Herring. If you go through that linked post there is nothing to indicate a wiring fault was resposible - quite the opposite. But he has not. Some nicks on the outer insulation are unimportant. But have you found a wiring fault? Some rubbing on the outer insulation is not it.
It's worth thinking about, but as far as I can feel and see, the damage is done. The insulation is not uniform and at one point, the internal wiring feels weaker. You can see it barely in the pic, the bulge just before the big gash on the left. It looks like it's taken a battering being in the wrong place. Repairing the wires is the second to last option. Clean and inspect the rest first, and I've yet to get the code read.
It's all canbus bollocks. Get a resistance somewhere thats not supposed to be there and its little brain has a hissy fit
@Duncan* I think you're right, the shielding on the preload cable seems to have taken the brunt, the preload tries to whir up but it cuts out.
Had similar problems on my enduro, it was a physical fault with the rear shock (don’t ask), but after having it all sorted, I have had 3 more DSS errors and each one has been when I have changed the rider mode without the engine running, I put it down to having a Lithium battery that hasn’t woken properly at the time. There is a place that supposedly repairs skyhook units, can’t remember where I got the info from, but just in case: https://www.mhracing.com/servicing/workshop-services
I've got a lithium, all 'looked' healthy but I've put my old battery on trickle and will swap over. Doesn't hurt to give it a shot. The suspension feels fine and was working wonders, and still is aside from this electrical issue. Which leads me to think it's not an actual unit failure, more a gremlin somewhere. Speaking of, I've checked every cable and nothing obvious for the sensors. My hands are not small enough to inspect the plugs under the LH side of the tank, so I'll do those after the battery swap if no luck.
Same same this end. Good luck! Edit: by that I mean literally every thing you mention was same for me. I can replicate my fault at will, otherwise it runs fine with no errors…fingers crossed.
Reading this I'm somewhat glad that I'm now running Ohlins manual suspension. Do miss the connivence of Skyhook mind you.
I can assure you the errors were caused by the damage to the wire. I had a cut in it. Replacing the unit fixed the issue.
No wires (other than the preload cable pictured) is damaged, out of place or oddly seated. All connections were prestine (I cleaned and prepped all of them when I first got the bike), and in place. I've changed out the battery but have yet to go for a ride, I'll do that tomorrow.
