My rev counter works intermittently and I think I've narrowed the fault down to the drive from the cylinder head. To get the shaft out to look at the helical gear I need to pull this brass fitting away from the head but it's in there pretty tight. Has anyone got any tips on getting it out? TIA
Well got it out and the drive looks ok. The rev counter seems sensitive to the routing of the cable and provided it's in the correct position everything is fine.

Make sure your cable is fitted the right way up, the little brass ring on the inner cable should be at the clock end. It’s worth a look
Whilst your in there it's also wise to give both the cable and the inside of the outer sheath a good clean with summat like brake cleaner or similar degreasing solvent and then lightly lube with lithium grease.
The worm drive for the revcounter on the horizontal camshaft is only a press fit clamped between the camshaft and the bearing with a washer in between. They have been known to slip giving no, or intermittent, drive to the tacho cable. I had issue with a 907ie (same engine) with the end of the cable not engaging properly with the gearbox on the back of the revcounter. Another cable sorted it.
This might be my issue. The teeth of the shaft I pulled out of the head were faultless without any marks suggesting uneven wear. With the cable disconnected from the gauge and the engine running I can see it turning. I tried holding it between my fingers to see if light pressure would stop it turning and I couldn't so I think the drive side is good. I haven't had time yet to route the cable as shown in the diagram WAH900 posted.
My 97 tacho sometimes stops working too, a gentle push of the cable up into the gauge cluster sorts it. (While riding).
