So it looks like its been a while since we've talked chain and sprockets so maybe peoples opinion of there choice has changed over the last few thousand miles. About to change out my original set after 16k miles and dont fancy ducatis OE one. Currently thinking supersprox and a DID gold chain because im vain So what is everyone using and are you happy ?
Just bought the very same thing from Big Risk in Germany, not fitted yet, very soon though, its a lovely bit of kit too
Sounds like the setup im going to fit when the time comes, only on 8k miles so far but a DID gold/black with standard front and a 42 tooth rear is what im after.
Right so im pretty set on the supersprox and a DID vx chain, but im contemplating going for the 15/42 gearing but cant find a definitive answer to what lenth chain ill need, i understand the stock is 108 but will i need a 110 or will 108 do just fine?
The difference in chain length will make no difference. As it will be set up with the correct slackness & give (before setting off!!!!), till you have worn the chain in after the first journey or journeys & then need re-adjusting. Changing one sprocket will give u information, changing both will cause a headache. Recommend doing one & before that seeing what speed you are in at a certain gear to what rev's you get. Lots of scribbling & noting down stuff etc..

As we are on the subject how the hell do you know when you are near the end of adjustment on the Multi as I have a 3-4000 mile trip coming up and a bike on 10,500 miles with 3-4000 to do before my trip so really don't want to out in the wilds with a change that needs replacing in the worlds most expensive county (Norway) ??
The OEM chain/sprockets are typically good for 12-18K miles depending upon how you ride and maintain them. On that basis, if I were in your position I'd change before the trip as you would be getting to the end of life when a more frequent adjustment starts being required before it finally gives up the fight. Checking the amount you can move the chain off the sprocket is a good sign of impending issues also. I'll be doing a similar thing in May with a trip to Spain/Portugal; my rear tyre will have to be changed despite having plenty of wear left. Have a good trip!
Thanks That was pretty much the answer I was expecting, 18K maximum and no way of checking the progress of adjustment. in 30 years of riding on the road its the first chain driven bike I have owned where you cant tell how much chain adjustment you have left New C and S added to the list of expense before I go then as the belt service is due round about that time as well....joy
Just to update....ran out of adjustment at 11500 miles this week so new C and S hopefully next week I wont be using chain wax again, (as i did on this one for 6500 miles) so back to old fashioned lube
Have ordered new Chain, sprocket and new cush drive rubbers since its chain no3 all the way from the us since I wanted 42T so will report back on change.
I've just got a JT 14t front to try, does anyone know is it much hassle to change your self ( basic knowledge ) will I have to split my chain and alter length ? cheers,
It's very tight with the chain around the front sprocket. It is very fiddly. It can be done without spitting the chain though as I didn't need too. There is a guide on here somewhere as well.
Just slacken the chain on the eccentric, it will need re-tensioning anyway with a different sized sprocket.
42 T sprocket and new chain and front sprocket upgrade complete. Much better with those 2 extra rear teeth, zezzz there is definitely a big improvement in the response. Do it.
