Not sure if it makes any odds but the 748 has a 5.5 inch rim and im sure the 998 has a 6 inch rim maybe this is the discrepancy. ?
Demon tweeks in the uk do one by a company called skidmarx in plain black. Worth a look.

If you swap over the face only from a mph speedo and fit it into your kmh speedo wouldn't the total mileage recorded still be kilometres though.

I used a piece of 19x19 aluminium box section to alter the latch locator and worked out pretty spot on. Only cost about $6.
Try wemoto.co.uk They list a brush set and also starter motors for some models. Prices seem pretty good to me.
