You were bang on Keith. Here's a pic of the attempted repair. After cleaning off the old chain lube more damage on the crankcase was found....

You may well be right Keith, but I thought there would be more damage than that. Not that I've seen the result of a broken chain before.
The engine is now out of the frame. When I removed the clutch slave cylinder I found some damage to the alternator cover where the clutch push rod...
