My 999 chewed one up as well. Plate was too vertical. Also if you're getting close to chain adjustment limit that would make a difference too.

Have you looked at Hopp Rider Training. I've heard good reports from a friend. They use Cadwell Full Circuit, and seem to fit what you are after....

I used it on recommendation a while back when commuting, and it worked OK. Certainly better in rain than without it.
