The leak could be due to a cracked overflow pipe in the tank . I had an 888 tank that did that, I temporarily fixed it by blocking the overflow...
The relays are electro mechanical and as such ripe for age related intermittent faults. My 916 Fuel pump relays became a bit intermittent recently...
Try replacing the fuel pump relays they may be getting a bit dicky in their old age , its a cheap(ish) easy option.
