I would say that a carbed SS and a 749/999 are worlds apart, the SS is a low tech simple parts bin model, the 749/999 was the top-of-the-line...

Maybe the hoses in the gas tank is cracked. Does it occur only when tank is low?
Have you checked belt tension, then. Just to rule out all the easy-to-check things.
Have you changed the belts, all marks line up?
If you have real OCD the bike will never get dirty in the first place :-)
