Chain set on the slightly slack side seems to suit our bikes better, definitely doesn't like to be to tight
Looks like you are on to the culprit, fit a new switch and you should be good to go
Check that any wires are not shorting on handle bar when you close the switch up
Not hard at all, connector located under top LH panel on my 1260, but there are also two breather pipes that need swopping over from old cap to new

Checked mine at the weekend 3000 miles, and starting to corrode, not too bad, but still not happy, removed the foam for now, will see what dealer...
Side stand switch was a common suspect on the early models, not sure if it got modified on the newer models, but could be worth a look

Graphite lock powder, better than oil or grease guys, oil and grease will attract road dirt especially were it is mounted Loads on e-bay
The thread in the calliper bracket is a blind hole, so to long a bolt could bottom out, not securing the brake calliper correctly, or even worse...

Looks a bit more purposeful/ functional, ie would offer better protection without looking to ugly if you get my drift ..?
