Erm, no it's not. It has new smaller fairings and a different nose, hence 'Custom Design'.
That to me just looks like the Panigale with the fairings off, whereas the original looked much more thought about than a naked 1098.
Was just thinking what a shame Lorenzo is leaving Ducati, he seems to have finally tamed the bike.

Mine wasn't bottom end bearing, mine was down to bad mechanical work which caused a gear to oval the hole it sits in in the engine casing.

I would say not. The 1198 ironed out the potential cash cow bombshell (bottom end bearing) of the 1098 so hands down would be the one to go for.
