personally l would say the main thing to look for is bad maintenance by previous owners that are not used to Italian ownership

most of all patience but as said plenty freeing fluid ie wd40 and maybe a bit of heat once it starts moving keep going a little bit at a time
I have done similar at the rear to work on the back end only used the home made stand yesterday to see if it works put the bar through the frame...
21mm thick wall stainless tube al its what I had lying around used it before to support the bike just had other stands not sure I could get much...
