Check cable connections, if the batteries good check the solenoid, I had one recently "stick", it was making all the right noises fuel pump...

Pretty much yeah, you're not pulling the head off its just a cover, once off its easy access to the cams & rockers unlike the desmoquattro (996)...
You're always gonna have a witness of oil when the cover comes off that's why I thought the horizontal one looked suspect too dry & dirty, there...
The 6 hex bolts on top of the cover in the second pic, examine the joint where the black rubber gasket is it should be obvious if it's been apart...
Don't know thought it was standard practice, it'll just labour without it and won't catch, with it it'll fire up fairly easy idling at 3Kish leave...
998 (pretty much same motor) always use it from cold.
