On my SS, the best suspension mod I did was to replace the fork oil with lighter stuff. They actually worked then.

Is this with a wet clutch? Commonplace with a dry clutch. Some strange folk use grease to prevent it.
It won't be the difference between super unleaded and unleaded but it could be contamination.
Could it be water in the fuel??

How warm was it? These bikes suffer from carb icing below about 10 degrees. That could fit.
