More s/h spares, the 998R/999R motors have different bore/stroke valves unique to those bikes only.
With my '00 SSie(2000 miles a year) I change, oil/filter every year. Belts/fluids every 3 years. Shims every 4 years. (Factory recommend belts 2yrs)
Superbike bike R's have hotter motor than S models. That to me is part of appeal, plus the carbon bodywork.
I would go for 996R over 998R. Bayliss/2001wsb linage plus spares availability possibly better as same bore/stroke as 998/999. Facelift 999R/Xerox...

I think smaller valves give better torque.
MT10 mototransformer I got slightly higher clipons on 999. Makes a lot of difference. I am thinking sf848 or the new 939SS when my body says no.
Run motor up to temp and wipe it off with inside of old leather glove or similar.
