The wheelbase will have an effect, but you cannot simply compare wheelbase of different bikes due to the different CoGs that they will have....
The wheelbase on the 899 is 11mm shorter than the 1199 (at 1426mm vs 1437mm) so it's hardly worth calling it "shorter" !!
They are crimped at the bevel (the black outer ring) so the only way to get them apart is to either cut/destroy the bevel, which is obviously not...

As I said before, unless they've change tactics recently (as in within the last six months) they only build the 796 in Thailand.

What makes you think it was made in Thailand? As far as I know, they only make the Monster 796 in the Thai factory.
