Check the 'O' rings on the quick-disconnect fuel lines, alternatively could be a cracked (plastic) fuel level sensor nut.
The puller uses impact to remove (twatting it with a hammer after just nipping it up) and so the gear just gently falls off, there isn't space...
IIRC those screws and the plate are to hold the bearing in, the shaft should push through the bearing from the outside but any crud in the splines...
I have used Classic coatings in Grantham (same company) for frame & wheels and I am very happy with the result. They masked all the openings...
My 916 will soon see temps of over a 100 degrees if in traffic, other than the hot air blown at me from the fan it doesn't seem to suffer for it...

Timing marks, each of the dots on the flywheel indicate that the relative cylinder is at TDC when at the pointer in the window.
