There are also far superior platings that can be done over standard, many who race tune engines replate the barrel for longer life etc from brand new!

As you already know mate the investigation of where the oil is coming from is first on the list, I'd not test anything, wind anything, start...
I'd not bother testing it mate until I found the source of the oil! If you try and test it with oil in the barrel you will get a false reading...
