I did try an ebay cheapie, (not M&P) and it got bloody hot! I sent it back. Best bet is to upgrade to a mosfet type. Read here; The upgrade fix...

Keep it on trickle charge (when not riding:wink:) the cold starting amps are barely adequate for these big arsed twins IMHO.
