I would stick with 748- 996 forks. 996 were 53/53 mm top yoke/ bottom yoke while all SS, monsters and ST of the time were 50/54 IIRC.
In the absence of a decent voltmeter or ammeter, have you tried turning the engine over with the new battery after leaving it off charge...
