On mine (2005 749) it'll start in gear clutch in, stand up. If the stand's down it needs to be in neutral.
I did miss the word 'only', apologies. Not too confusing when I specifically pointed to the clamp as the culprit though!
Warning in the Renthals, the clamp doesn't allow the OEM reservoirs to butt up close to the forks and stretches the throttle cables badly when on...
