Same as with any bike really, as long as you keep on top of the servicing and upkeep... I've found my 999S to be just as reliable as any other...
The exact same thing used to happen to my 999S, that was down to having a lightened flywheel though (not enough inertia to keep the motor running)...

Cant really go wrong with a fuel cap, it is what it is....all I would say is make sure the breather hole is clear and unblocked.
