Never had an issue with my 748 or 916 in the 20 years I had them.
Did you try the dash connector or the fuses? You said it was still running when the dash went blank - does it restart and run?

Oh dear. Check the connector that goes into the back of the dash is secure (with the ignition off, in case of voltage spike).
I know it’s not what you want to hear but, for peace of mind, I think you might have to take the cover off and check everything is correctly...
