You cannot run these bikes on the cheap unless you are a competent mechanic.
If you want to go to ride the roads then go when there is no racing as it's quieter and safer then.
I'd ask whether the rockers have been checked recently along with valve clearances. There is no way to check the rockers other than pull the bike...
The screen problem is an issue with the type of bike. The new Triumph Explorer is the same.

The 1098 will have noticeably more power and be cheaper to service. The belts still need changing every two years though.
Have you thought about a Multistrada? Might give you the best of both worlds.
