When you tried to run the motor and "...tripped the electrics in the house...", was it an RCD or an MCB/fuse that went?

Clamp it to wood/MDF right next to the hole and drill through the sheet into the wood. Clamp(s) will stop the sheet riding up the drill...

Drill quality is a major factor so use, at least, HSS (high speed steel) ones. What metal are you drilling? Are you using a hand drill or pillar...
