also if your licence expires you don't have to resit your test as your entitlement to drive is still valid.( this all may be balls )
if stopped you will be done for driving with an out of date licence not for driving with no licence. its like riding a bike with an expired...

yes you can drive, your licence has only expired not your entitlement to drive.
