Depends on speed, temperature, pressure... I put a 180/60 on my M1100 once for a Trackday. There was visible clearance between tyre and hugger...
I'm a standard sized short-arse type (10 stone, 5ft7)..I have a 916,749 and 1098, none of them are uncomfortable for me. I was just warning the OP...
Whatever garage did that must be a bit crap. My recommendation is that you take it elsewhere next time...or do it yourself for a fraction of the cost.
Don't go anywhere near a 748/9*6 if you think the 848 riding position is extreme!
