There was a diode fitted to early starter relays as standard which was supposed to protect other circuitry from electrical spikes and surges....
it would be straight forward if you wanted to, same wheel and you have the redundant fork fixing as you know. You can even use a caliper and disc...
have you got a meter to check state of battery? if starter not churning even with additional battery then it's worth bypassing the starter...
have you tried a second battery jump yet? I think you are getting warm as regards the additional wiring, does the malfunctioning fuel gauge...
