Cadmium plating would work to but i think the only people who use this is the Aviation industry where metric is still not widely used.

Have you re-set and re-learned the gear indicator? mate had the same problem last month and his bike ran terribly whilst it was not registering...
Does the fuel pump prime when the ignition is turned on?
