It does look like a freeze plug, is your coolant green? You really need to tap them in square with a bit of sealant around the edge
Had exactly the same problem with an R1. When I finally got round to it the seats and valve were in poor condition so it was a head off job.

Can can rotate the tank 180° and fit the connectors and wiring and watch the injectors operating
