1200 DVT 11 Month Major And Minor Issues

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by costis, Mar 28, 2016.

  1. I've got the XR so intrigued to know what you thought, obviously looks are subjective but it'd never be classed as a pretty bike. You can however make them look aggressive which is good enough for me

Performance and handling wise though pretty much made my mind up, that and the fact I didn't want to risk the multistrada dvt gen 1.

Still, horses for courses as they say.

Some love them, some hate them

  2. i own my 2015 Ducati Multistrada 1200 S for about 11 months. And this is not my first ducati.
    1-Fuelling getting worse.
2-I need to change all brake, clutch liquids by my self before the service cause they were black! and clutch start to play up.
3-the screen lost a part on the motorway its shaking very badly
4-i add 1 lt of oil to the engine and it still doesn't show in the oil screen ? if i am that low why the computer didn't warn me?
5- The major problem for me is i feel like the engine is loosing power. and very shaky, rattles. i almost lost my midrange, thats how i feel
6- 37 mpg is not cool at all! even in the city !
7- touring bags already getting fiddly, left bag is getting harder and hardder to open .

well i am scratching my head thinking this bike only has 5800 miles on it! Will it last to see the first service??? :) lol

well i might say goodbye to it before it turns to nasty

  3. Do you run it on regular or premium unleaded? Try premium.
My oil consumption so far was 1.75 liters for 15000 km. Manufacturer accepts up to 1 liter per 1000Km!
Did you get the fueling map update on November?
Maybe the DVT system is not working properly.
    See your dealer.

  4. i used to use 97 premium but dealers said no need, also i ride the bike everyday, every weather , i think its something to do with exhaust valve. i read some stories here. but i think i had the update allready.

i can't confirm if DVT working or Working correctly , i can't even confirm my cornering lights working / or my so called cornering ABS. These systems on ducati are very new and i dont think they have done a good job with it.

  5. More Feedback from the SX long test ride.

After 3 days and 600 km with the BMW S1000XR test bike. (11.5 months and 15000 Km on my DVT)

WHAT YOU MISS FROM THE DVT1200S

    1. Forward seating position. Feeling of not being right above the steering to really control the bike.
    2. Ripping acceleration from 6000 to 8000 rpm of the Duc.
    3. Changing directions immediately (24 rake and no stabilizer)
    4. Feeling of the Brembo M50 calipers and radial pump.
    5. Looks! The Duc is a supermodel compared to the industrial type design of the BMW.
    6. Plush suspension when hitting large potholes. No soft mode for XR.
    7. Suspension travel for mild off road.
    8. Ease of touring at medium rpm at high speeds
    9. Excellent feeling clutch (hydraulic and adjustable)
10.LED lights that are excellent. Cornering lights.
11.Dash info such as ambient temp (with ice warning), USP charging and Bluetooth built in.
12.Customization of riding modes. (about 16 million combinations compared to 96)
13.Room to move back and forth on the seat.
    14.Beautiful V2 sound

WHAT YOU GET MORE FROM THE S1000XR

    1. Beautiful fueling from 0-12000 rpm. Can pop 6th gear at 50kph and wind it up to 260kph with no vibration or ugly sounds. Can keep 7 - 9000 rpm forever without fear of something will break.
    2. POWER above 8000 rpm.
    3. SPEED. The XR smokes the DVT anywhere and everywhere. As well as all liter bikes I challenged.
    4. Lighter bike feeling overall. I couldn’t believe it.
    5. Gorgeous quickshifter that works miracles in 90% of your clutch work, both up and down. Use of clutch limited to 1st gear from standstill.
    6. Stability in corners and at high speeds. Even a moron can scratch the footpegs… No wobble at 200 - 260 kph
    7. Extremely potent gearing for fast riding.
    8. Acceleration without having to turn systems off. Holeshot master.
    9. More effective brakes even though a cheaper Brembo version is used. Cornering braking works better without lifting the bike as on the Duc. Continental (ABS) made adjustments on this particular bike whereas Bosch just sold the ME9.1 to Ducati (and KTM)
    10.Easier mode and suspension settings.
11.Easier to read analog tach with an adjustable shift light
12.Strong starter can start a truck engine.
13.A normal key that locks the bike in 1 sec, and opens the fuel tank in 2 seconds. It is also waterproof and needs no battery or contact cleaning.
14.A rear suspension that works extremely well (having a lever system) The Duc is excellent but this is a tad better.
15.Ease of mind when coasting at low speed or in traffic, and no need to keep your left hand on the clutch in tight turns.
16.Vibrations for pillion. Buzzing on the steering at 6000 rpm but not really annoying if you don't squeeze the grips.
17.Quality bolts and screws everywhere, that are stainless and marked BMW (even the tiny ones)
    18.Air coverage for the feet.
19.No DVT system that is in its baby phase. SX engine derived from RR and time tested on the S1000R.
20.Cables and brake lines are carefully routed and protected from moving parts.
21.A dash that even though it looks dated is scratch resistant (!!!)
22.No noises from gear changing even with the clutch.
23.No engine braking when driving fast in mountain passes.

  6. I've had few issues like the lock malfunction and the fuel indicator but they were fixed right away. The dealer has always been there for anything I had to complain or ask even before I bought the bike contrary to KTM and BMW dealers who were the biggest b.tches I encountered and I swore I'll never spend a dime on their machines after such behaviour especially at that price range.
To me the biggest factor on a motorcycle is the drivability. That is a factor where the actual engineering skill comes to shine since the rest is a matter of one or another component. In that sense the Multistrada beats any other bike out there, there is simply no other bike that will blow your mind in that way. One can use specific component references to competitor bikes but at the end of the day those are such insignificant details that sometimes I admit I perceive them even wrongly as trolling.
Italian products have always suffered quality issues be it Ducati or Ferrari - and those cost a lot more- but they're loved because of their final outcome and performance. One buying a Ducati should already know all that - I went and got me a Monster just to see what the hell the Ducati fame is all about. Was I delighted with the sound and quality? Well coming from Japanese I was literally horrified, but there was that sweetness in the driving that my previous Kawis and Hondas never had.
Now since I mentioned performance I have it hard to understand the complaining about it as so far I haven't come across a bike inside the city limits that would match or come close to beating it. I've been challenging R1s and Hayabussas and have always been first at the next lights and I believe that that has much to do with what's between the handlebar and the seat and less with a 1200cc bike with all that power their almighty at Ducati has given us - and you can have all the quick shifters and smooth clutches in the world if that makes you happy. Or perhaps at the end of the day I did an excellent job also driving in that marvellous engine of the Multistrada

  7. got old 1200s touring 14 plate skyhook 2 years and few months old now, no issues at all
was going to upgrade to DVT next year
prehaps i will test ride the BMW s1000xr

  8. I think the footpeg issue is the most important thing here and the lack of stability which an extra pair of wheels and some all round casing of the rider should fix.

    ..no wait...

  10. Pretty much agree with all of that to be fair, although I purposely went with the sport model, not the SE.

The sport model retains the good toys such as QS up/down the box, heated grips etc but uses adjustable suspension that's not pre programmed.

Easier to upgrade springs and adjust although it means having to use a screw driver and spanner.......I'm happy with that as it's also less to go wrong.

Oh, the HP seat (high version I got) is far better than the stock seat and allows more movement

  11. Small business? They are owned by Volkswagen Audi Group. They may well run themselves but They have access to all the resources and engineering expertise they could ever need. So they don't have any excuses.

  12. Is there an expertise-exchange program in place though? Or are VAG just financial owners/managers with little or no say in the day-to-day running of Ducati? It'd be interesting to know.

  13. hoping Tim Macabee is watching this, as it looks like he has a bunch of potential employees solving all Ducati's issues

  14. The DVT system is from VAG. In the future they will use TSI maybe. They tested a diesel version of the testastretta engine a year ago. They have access to all VAG technology.

  15. I was out on mine at 6:30 this morning for a blast. 1st thought was - thank god for heated grips! :)

Did 130 miles and back in time for breakfast with the family. I've had the bike new since Xmas and today was about the first time I'd used it on some dry road. I've got the 42T sprocket on mine and it really goes well!
I've had a couple of niggles but today's ride has made those feel pretty insignificant now - can't wait for a few more warm dry days!

    Happy riding! :upyeah:
