1199s - Front & Rear Cylinder Slight Oil Leak

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by MaxDec10, Feb 7, 2019.

  1. Looking for a bit of pricing advice please chaps.

My 2013 1199s has a very slight oil leak on both front and rear cylinders. What would be a ballpark figure from the dealers/specialists to have this sorted?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Hi, do you have any pictures of the effected areas? as it would aid assessment

  3. Agree with Nathanhu' comment... pictures of where it's coming from would help. Worst case is heads off for gaskets (doubtful though to be honest) and that's a big job.... without knowing where it's from, it'd be hard to get anyone to quote.

  4. Thanks guys,

Stock image from the workshop manual - I basically get a light sheen of oil down the right-hand side of the rear cylinder. It mostly gathers around the large bolt on the lower right corner and often reaches the sensor seen at the bottom centre of this stock image. I clean it off after every ride but surprisingly it even seems to gather oil when the bikes been stood for weeks?

Front cylinder (stock image again)- Along the lower half of the cylinder head, right along the gasket line, I can see oil and dirt mix that has formed a line of muck from the lower left to lower right cylinder head bolts.

For want of a better term, I'd call it a weep rather than leak on both cylinders but I think it's about time to get it resolved.

One point to note... I did have a Desmo service about 2,000 miles ago.

    Any advice gratefully appreciated.

  5. sounds like the rockcover gaskets are leaking

  6. Thanks Nathanhu,

In that case, it would be both heads off and replace gaskets. Essentially a Desmo without checking clearances.

I may try to check the torque on the rear cylinder, lower bolts and see if that stop the leak.

  7. At the risk of looking like a right numpty... Have I got confused between rocker-cover gasket and cylinder head gasket?

  8. The golden covers are the rocker covers, with 5 bolts each to secure them. The Cylinder heads are sometime bigger than you think , and they are attached with Nuts, right at the bottom of the 'head' where it attatches to the Main Engine halves.
just for interest i was also amazed at the size of the pistons and the short stroke they move up and down the Bore, its about 6cm of travel and thats it.. (if i remember correctly)

  9. Yep. :)

  10. Well, I'm a happy numpty. Rocker cover gasket fix shouldn't break the bank, should it?

    Thanks for the guidance guys.

  11. Rocker covers sound most likely as they would have been off for the Desmo. Have a look around in the nooks and crannies with a torch and look for "witness" marks or lines in the oil to try and find where it's coming from. It usually runs "down" so look for the highest point there is oil. It can also get "blown" back when the bike is moving or run to left of the bike when it's on it's sidestand....

  12. Thanks Nelly. I'll get the fairings off over the weekend.

  13. A few years ago I had a weep from somewhere on a Kawasaki, I sprayed it with engine cleaner and with my air line blew everything off, got rags and cleaned the lot, then started the bike up in the garage and let it get hot (with a little revving) and hey presto I spotted the leak, tightened the top bolts down and it never came back.

  14. Give it a dusting with Talc, it will smell nice :)

You could also re torque the cam cover bolts - someone might just have forgot to nip em up

  15. Thanks Exige.

I'll stick some pics up on Saturday afternoon with her all talc'd up.

  16. Don't over do it, tickle it on with a little brush :bucktooth:

  17. I had an ex that would have done that sort of thing... I always had a roll of carpet ready in the garage should she need to go on an unplanned extended vacation...;);)
