I had a ride down the EastYorks coast from Skipsea through Hornsea, Aldborough to Withersea where i had a Bacon and Egg butty. It's a superb bendy road. On the way back came out of a 90° bend accelerated and the bike cut out. Pulled in the clutch and coasted to a stop. There were no lights on the dash. It should have had generator and oil showing and neutral when I stopped. I turned the key off and then back on and everything lit up and it started. Rode home with no more problems. Yesterday I went in the garage put the key in and turned it on and nothing I was about to turn it off and the lights came on and it started. After that I turned it on and off a few times and it was OK. Im thinking that the power relay down by the battery is sticking and on its way out Anyone had similar problems
I had the main (yellow) relay fail intermittently, when it goes everything just switches off - sounds like your problem might be the same. You can get an original from Ducati or a compatible for much less but be aware it is a slightly different variant of relay from the norm so your local motor factor might not stock it. Although it is a standard 5-pin design it has 2 NO (87) contacts rather than NO (87) & NC (87a) 'changeover' contacts. I found a replacement on ebay for just a few £. My advice, buy 2 so you have a spare plus, if you have multiple (older) Ducatis they all use the same part.
it should be easier than usual to find because of the total power loss symptom - i've known car and motorcycle battery main terminal connectors to go open-circuit and present like this. Isn't there a big 35amp fuse in a seperate holder somewhere on these also? - would probably be light corrosion in this case.
Ive cleaned all the earth's and checked the fuse. Ive ordered the relay from Ducati Mondo, I was aware of the relays difference. I will be nicking the relay from the MV till the new one arrives. Had it running today and nothing untoward.
