748 Sps.. Just Need To Get My License!

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by 328isport, Jun 10, 2021.

  1. Hey newbie
What a great bike to own loving the scoot too.
Get your licence do advanced riding go on track with a school
Buy a cheap 600 to gain experience then venture onto your prized possession
I like how your are listening to people’s thoughts.

I passed my test and went straight onto my 600SS with no bike experience.
It was an adventure I was scared and ecstatic at the same time.
Was scary fast I held the traffic up going around tight bends :D
But with the right fellow riders and lots of listening I got it.

Take your time do the right thing for you and blooming enjoy polishing and starting her up for now :)

Oh and by the way you forgot my rubbish bin pictures :) include your bike if you must

  2. My first bike was a 749 and everyone told me not to do it. They were right and to a certain extent they were wrong.

they were right because these bikes are not the easiest to ride. Dry clutches are hard work and the brakes are much more fierce than on a 750 Monster. Make an error with your right hand and you will fly forward since they have torque everywhere. Also the riding position is not the easiest to start out on

Inexperience will lead you to make errors with all of these and in my opinion it’s not the throttle that is the bike issue but the brakes. It is very easy to grab a handful and go down very quickly. Whereas on a bike with poorer brakes you have more chance of getting away with it.

But I lived for tell the tale and so it is doable.

the advice about doing a track day is a good idea. Start off going out very early in the morning with little traffic and ride the same roads to build confidence. Once you have a bit of a feel. Do a track day and you will learn a lot more about what you can and can’t do. Especially how to brake hard safely and have the confidence to do it safely.

    great looking bike- have fun

  3. @Ducbird bin pic to follow!

Again thanks for the insights, much appreciated. I do think if there is to be a bike before the 748 I'll need to carefully consider what i go for, I can remember when i did my CBT that the CG125 i did it on taught me very little about how to ride the Aprilia RS125.. so my concern would be if i went for a run of the mill 600 etc whether I would learn much transferable experience for the 748, and whether it may actually muddy the waters a bit rather than getting into the 748 eyes open without any real preconceptions.

I wonder whether something like a KTM RC390 may be a reasonable choice, so at least I will get the sports bike feel.

749er your comments about going out early on roads i know is exactly what I'd plan to do whatever bike i end up riding first, I've got a route in my mind that also has a lot of side road/business park areas along it which i can use to have a play at slow speed turns etc. Also find the throttle on the 748 incredibly sensitive, I move it about on private land in 1st sometimes and applying a consistent throttle isn't exactly easy.. not a problem for now as of course use the clutch to control any way but expect it could be a bit hairy/overkill once on the move, so if its possible to adjust it and back it off a bit I may get this done when it goes into the specialist.

  4. think i need a yellow 748 in the garage again now :D

  5. It does look awesome and i have a serious twitch about owning one now. Ideally i want a 998 but this looks mega!!

I've also created a thread titled Education reuired..... so get on over there and start educating me please :p

  6. Bridge the gap with an old Ducati 600/750 so you get to use a dry clutch, assuming those have them

  7. I would agree with that
Plenty fast enough a nice learning curve
Bags of fun need to ride them
The multi was great but boring me I like a challange and the 600 did that
    I went straight from 125 to ER500 to 600Ss

  8. The bin... and a few others :)

  9. Definitely get your licence. Why not, biking's great!

Definitely get something less intense to gain experience on.

I was 25 years on bikes, worked my way up, took thee years off (life) then bought a 1200 Multistrada Enduro. My riding skills were VERY rusty but I'm getting back into the vibe. Police skills course next week, you never stop learning.

  10. P.S. bike looks lovely, I know nothing about them, can't imagine it's an easy ride, you will get so much more out of riding it (and you must ride it of course) with some experience under your belt.

  11. Great bin pic your in :)

  12. My first big bike bike was also a 748sps back in 08. Before that I had only ridden 50cc's and borrowd some jap 600's from my friends :p
Don't worry about it. Just use your noggin and if possible take som riding courses after getting your licence.

BTW, i crashed mine after 2 days, hehe

  13. Lol Andreas that started so well..

    How did you crash it?

Damaging the bike is something else to consider and would go in favour of getting something else first. I'd be absolutely gutted if I fell off or dropped it, in fact its simply not an option!

  18. In fairness you have to be quite patient / determined to hit 150 on most 80/90's bikes. A 748 isn't too much of an animal, it's more like a 600 than a 750 really. A 600 Bandit won't be much slower on the road...

The worst thing with a 748 is that some days it's the best bike in the world and everything just flows, other days it's just a horrible thing to ride. And you never know which it will be until you're a few miles in... Great bikes though.

  19. Yes the theoretical top speed doesn't put me off going straight to it, as quite simply it won't be being ridden like that. Rock all interest in going anything like that fast.

Its more the power for me, 100bhp odd might be a bit of a stretch for a new rider but perhaps to ridiculously so, I expect something like an Aprilia RS660 will be quicker and that seems to be aimed at less experienced riders, albeit i get it has lots of rider aids.

I remember years ago people used to restrict bigger bikes in order to get them to a certain power to make them legal to ride, is this still a thing? Could it be done on a 748? Just thinking of it as an option if i wanted to bring the power down while I get used to it.

  20. your be fine , just take it steady
