  3. Thanks XH558. I've wondered for a little while about trading it in for something with a less radical riding position but somehow it doesn't seem to appeal to me enough....
Wow, impressive tour dubcat! Puts me to shame. I guess it took about a day on a Hayabusa? ;)

  8. Could depend on a lot of things, but from experience of seeing bikes sell and the type of offers I have had for my 02 (given my miles are less) I feel the asking price is pretty fair.

My personal opinion, but I'm not parting with my money - I'm not the only one who thinks its priced fairly though, so maybe a multi quote with an angry face would have been more appropriate? :bucktooth::p:joy:

  9. AirCon, thanks for your private message which I've just replied to.

For everyone else, I don’t think the bike needs either a service or belt change yet because it’s only done 2,250 miles since the last belt change (in July 2014) and 750 miles since the last service (August 2017). Yes, I know I don't do enough miles!

Geoff Baines at Baines Racing can vouch for the condition and how it’s been looked after for the last 11 years. But please don’t phone him if you’re not seriously thinking of buying because he’s a busy guy - and a really decent one who cares about his customers - and I don’t want to abuse his good nature.

  10. I guess we all have our thresholds but for me a bike - certainly an R - with no new belts for five years and no service for two years definitely needs a service. But that is an aside, for I would immediately add that I think this is an excellent price for what is visibly an excellent bike, and that the fact that it's Baines-serviced would be a huge asset for me. (In the past whenever I've bought a Duc I've taken it straight to Geoff for a check anyway!)

(Sadly I'm in the same boat as the OP, i.e. resigned to selling my 998S on the grounds that I don't think I can ride it properly any more.)

  11. IMO if I bought it I’d change the belts, they’ve been sitting for too long and change all fluids. I’d also be checking when the Desmo service was last done.

That being said the belts & fluids I could do one wet afternoon but the Desmo....hmmm I’m not sure I’m up to that.

It looks a great bike and everything is negotiable in life.

  13. Nice that the guy is getting flamed for what exactly? Mines not had belts for 2 years in the 300 miles its done in that time. must make me negligent. and when i take it back to geoff B for a service id be surprised if he thought ill of it.

Ive only known him as long as ive had my bike (about 3 years) and he's one of the good 'uns and ive got no reason to take my banana anywhere else (and im a fussy git)

  15. To me, this bike needs a full service. The belts are waaaay overdue, and the oils and fluids are 3 years old. Oils should be refreshed annually and belts realistically bi-annually.

That being said the asking price as a start is fair. Shop around for servicing and its not that bad. I had full service, all fluids, belts and motul oils done at a specialist for less than 300. Its no deal breaker.

  17. I'm not going to flame the guy trying to sell the bike, but just to say and hopefully this will help him sell it, that he just needs to be confident that he knows his model before he takes viewings.

My best mate had an 02 R model, it was a £1300 service by MotoRapido to do cambelts etc, albeit it did have a chain and sprockets also for that. The reason I say it is that EVERY person who contacted us about the bike (as I helped advertise it) really knew their onions, they knew exactly what year had the carbon airbox, and that the camblets were thicker for this year because of the abuse the valve train gives them etc etc and they went through it with a fine tooth combe.

When you are trying to sell rare classics that command a price, just be totally confident as personally if you said to me that it's had belts 3 years ago but doesn't need them as it's done 200 miles I'd probably walk away because I wouldn't want to get into an argument over it. And yes, I have the money in the bank from selling my RGV so I would have seriously considered this but want to sell the 848 before I get another 748r

  18. Jesus!! the belts cost about £120 retail and oil (motul 300v) about 50 quid, filter on top about £8. Add a bit of fluid on top for your brakes and clutch.. I cant see where it hits £1k! You just need to know where to go!
