999 749 / 999 Modifications - What Did You Do ?

  3. Had my 749s for about 10 weeks now. In that time I've added just over a thousand miles. In terms of mods, etc I've ditched the tin ware heel & exhaust guards and added some carbon ones, plus a carbon clutch cover, rear hugger and sprocket cover. An optimate charger lead should hopefully aid battery life too.

    I've had a custom map done by Chris at CJS Racing too.

    That's it for now at least.

  4. R1 throttle tube is a good, cheap mod and a starting circuit cable kit will actually save you money by preserving your sprag clutch.

  5. hy, whats your before n after thoughts with the 924 conversion m8?
     
  6. It’s been a great project to build and ride. And I’m very happy with the results. It outputs 130 at the wheel on my buddy’s dynojet rollers. But I think they are optimistic and the theoretical output is more like 125bhp.
    Either way I’m happy. I can pass modern 600 jap bike on the straights with ease. But the modern 1000’s still sail passed.
    The old 749 felt lacklustre, the 924 gives a manageable amount to power where I feel like it’s quick enough to be-able to thrash but not feel intimidating or overwhelming.
    Would I advise someone else to build one?? Maybe not. There are far easier ways to get more grunt. Like buying a 999 motor? But if you want an interesting project? Get on with it. Summers on its way.

  7. Simpler still to buy my tweaked 999, which has a very similar output to Northan Monkey’s.
     
  8. This was for disc bolts, not sprocket nuts.

  10. That is not a standard 999 cover, so still counts as a mod, albeit a more tasteful one.

  13. Replacing the heatshield screws with stainless ones from Halfords makes a huge difference, as does wearing an led headtorch to do the job. So much better when you can see what you're doing.

  18. Someone 'liked' one of my old posts on this thread this morning, which is what prompted me to revisit it.
    I thought I'd fettled mine a fair bit but some people seem to have hardly any original bike left...
