999 749 / 999 Modifications - What Did You Do ?

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by Dubs, Aug 12, 2015.

  1. Gilles adjusters and lifters, and a drillpress-and-file modded socket to deal with the axle nut.

  7. I like castings. They are a beautiful way to manufacture.

  8. Are the hooks intended to
be left in situ or added when you want to use a paddock stand?
Imho they don’t help the aesthetics any

  9. They are a separate part so can be removed if not required.

  10. Depends if you have a lifter stand doesn't it really.
The lifter stands are better in that the bobbins are on the stand rather than the arm, but yes they were never designed with looks in mind - but if you're an endurance team, then they save valuable seconds - you just throw the stand under there and lift.

  11. I leave them on for an easy option to use a rear stand with the cast swingarm.

The other options I’ve used are:

3/4 inch stainless steel rod through the axle, which is fine for chain maintenance but obviously not for removing the wheel.

Pit Bull supports specifically made for the cast swingarm. Honestly, this is a great option. It’s very stable but is a bit finicky to line up.

Since I park my bike on the rear stand in the garage to minimize using the beautiful but suspect side stand, the GP lifters on the Gilles adjusters are the easiest option.

  12. I did two things to my beautiful but suspect side stand.
The first was to bond a stainless plate onto the surface that bears the weight at the top end of the stand when you deploy it.
This helps a bit by not allowing the stand to swivel forward quite so far.
The second was to mould a platform sole onto the bottom of the stand in marine epoxy filler, which is close enough in colour to the aluminium of the stand to not be too obvious.
This helps a lot by effectively lengthening the stand.

  13. That sound like a good mod and something I’ll do in the near future! What did you use to bond the stainless plate to the aluminum?

  14. Good question.
Epoxy I think but I also made it a tight enough fit that it had to be tapped into place

  15. And now I find the email to tell me you quoted my post How are you you old devil?

  16. I'm good ta.
Missing the 999 but the off had to be treated as a wake up call.
68 is getting on a bit for riding litre sports bikes...
All healed now, even the toenail I lost has grown back.
The operation scar is barely visible, although I do have a notch in my shoulder that wasn't there before.
