749 749 Cutting Out Grrrrr!!

  1. As Charlie0749 said, mine was solved by new air filters. It ran too lean when no air flow. However this also exposed a poor fuel pump which it may also have been as this was running lean.

  3. that will be great,,,,,,,,, i done around 500 miles this week end , all on twisties , and have no back or muscle pain at all,, ( apart from sore left knee ) enjoy:)

  7. The maladies of the 749 are well known, the S variant was especially prone to stalling and poor starting. The cure was to have the cam timing, TPS, and CO trims reset. Other things to watch are:
    Front stick coil 02 -05 poor seal and can get damp easily. Swap to 06 variant.
    Air filters are comically small, so clean them regularly.
    Fuel filter
    Secondary earth see Exige, fitted one of his and what a difference.
    Every year clean and check battery terminals and positive to starter motor, and coat with dielectric grease.
    Fuel pump relay corrodes, keep a spare £1.90 on fleabay. Relocate to top of battery box and use the finger from a rubber glove to waterproof. (same as headlight relay so if you get stuck you can swap it)
    Earth on the ECU. There is a black flying lead that needs to be earthed to one of the screws, check this as if this is loose or damaged all sorts of odd things happen including ECU failure.
    Start switch corrosion.
    Starter solenoid corrosion.

    These bikes are now over 10 years old and if the electrics and minor service items have been neglected all sorts of random faults occur. I've hand mine since new in 2003, and apart from changing the front stick coil to the 06 version and the secondary earth from Exige I've not had any real problems. I do look after the electrics though, and part of my service routine is checking/cleaning the high current cables and earths.

    On the touring topic, went to Assen and around France on mine, with a tank bag and Kreiga ruck sack surprisingly capable and not too physically challenging.

  8. liking the tank bag idea, good for resting my chin on,,, but may fall asleep !!
     
  9. The tank bag allows you to take some of the weight off your wrists if you lean on it. I did Calais to Groningen for the Dutch TT with this set up and apart from stopping for fuel every 100 miles or so, was pretty comfortable

  10. What a good thread. Can anyone point me in the direction of the fuel pump relay i need? sounds like just the sort of thing i need in my bag for a trip to fort william next week end. First long run on this bike and i have visions of waiting for a recovery truck! here's hoping i dont need one.
     
  11. all v twins seem to suffer this ive had everything from 749 to panigale, all have done it. seeems to be when you are really smooth, and dont rev it up much. Good example is crawling in 1st on tick over, all of a sudden it stalls, people with a different riding style will suffer it less. Ie, lots of blipping, and clutch in and out.
    Its a miracle the v twin runs at all when you consider its design,

  12. My 749 just refused to start, fault codes 12.2 and 13.2. New fuel pump relay and she fired up no problem.
    I can`t emphasise the importance of having a spare relay. Moving it from behind the battery box to on top of it is a must do job. A couple of minutes later and I have a running bike again.
    The old relay lasted 364 days.

  14. There`s quite a few threads on it. I think a guy called Chris has posted a few times on this mod.
    The relay is behind the battery box heat shield, the hardest part (if you`re unlucky) is getting this heat shield off the battery box. The relay plug has enough wire to move to the top of the battery box so there`s no need for any altering of wires, there`s a square rubber mounting point that the relay fits into. Ducati must have known.

  15. thats good mate,, thank you,,, i already have it out and replaced and was wanting to relocate it but was not sure what to do with it,, ( not even having tried yet ), but now i see where you have it and i can appreciate that .:upyeah:
     
  16. No probs, glad I could help.
    I did consider lengthening the wires and mounting the relay further up the frame for even easier access. I decided against it though, the thought of the extra bad connections I might introduce put me right off the idea.
