749 possible ecu problem

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by chris052, Mar 14, 2013.

  1. The relay supplies the coils, the injectors and the fuel pump. It causes no end of problems. As it is a cheap part you should replace it. I can't understand why Ducati do no have it as a service change item. Make sure you get a couple of spares.

The relay is actually found below the starter solenoid. I had forgotten that I had relocated it to a more convenient position.

  2. Thanks Chris I will try that as the next step. I've already moved mine round to the front of the battery box in case I needed to get at it!

  3. Well I replaced the relay and the front spark plug for good measure then took it for a run, it was ok at low revs in town, until I got it on the motorway about 3 miles down the road and gave it some stick, first mile was ok then the engine management light came on and went off intermittently, not as bad as before as it stayed off sufficient to get home, I managed to stop the bike while the light was still showing (otherwise no codes will show) and just got the 10.2 error code, no others this time. I stripped down the battery box gubbins (again!) and cleaned everything with contact cleaner. Fired up first time no EOBD light and was ticking over fine but didn't bother road testing it again...to depressed!!.

I'm a bit confused: is this likely to be the coil drive failure issue I've heard about or would that mean the fault would be all the time as this is so intermittent?!

As I mentioned before I can't tell what model my ECU is as it has no stickers at all on it but as it's an 04 model I guess it's the IAW59M.

    Any thoughts?!

  4. Took it for a test ride today, same thing again ok up to 9500rpm then the EOBD light comes on, drop the revs and it goes off. After it's started to do this though it goes on and off intermittently at low revs too. 10.2 code showing!

Had enough fiddling, time to get someone to look at it that knows what they're doing!

    Couple of questions though:

1.If I ran the JPDiag program on it would it identify whether I had coil drive failure?

    2. If it did, does anyone have a spare IAW5AM ECU they want to sell (can send it to my folks house in England if you don't want the bother of sending it to NZ) - preferably flashed with a 2004 map, I only have G&G tail pipe(s) so presumably standard map would work?

    Cheers

  5. I had exactly the Same problems on my 03 749s, turns out it was a combination of a knackered ECU and a large ammount of Crud in the Tank, i can guarentee that if you clean your tank out you will be amazed at what comes out, took me eight hours of swilling and re filling but more than worth it, just be mindfull that if you take out the pump you will need to replace the rubber O ring
    Good luck with it.

  6. No it wouldn't.

Yes but it's not cheap! ;)
BTW, they are £960 + VAT from Ducati...

  7. Ouch, I think I will consult eBay!

  8. Thanks for the advice, fairly certain mine is the ECU though with all the EOBD errors and having replaced the cheaper bits, coil/plug/relay. Will clean out the tank though while it's off!

  9. if you can not find someone good in NZ can you not send your ECU to someone in AUS or GB to check it for you,, ( just a thot )

  10. Hi I see there are two threads on here that report "rough running 749`s". Being Old School biker i can only agree on the Basics.......not codes or ECU stuff sorry i know little about.
Rough running 749S one day...Smoothest running and tickover (ever!!!) 749S the next day !!!
Get the fuel filter """out and replace it"""", easy job.
Siphon out all the petrol with a hose (outside garage or shed) into spare cans.
Remove petrol pipes (mop up small amount of fuel from pipe ends) and electric plugs.
remove Tank (back and up movement )
Place tank on end and remove base plate with three spare longer 6mm bolts (a little at a time screwing in) after removing three securing nuts.
Wriggle whole lot out and replace with new fuel filter and use new pipe clips (very small )
To replace whole assembly and base plate, clean up old O`ring and it`s locating groove (or have new O`ring but still clean up locating groove) lubricate O`ring with very small smear of vacoline or the like.
Wriggle the whole lot back in tank.
Get base plate "square and level" and just push home with even hand pressure keeping it square and level. Tighten retaining nuts evenly too Ducati spec.

The tank bottom was as clean as a whistle with no rust or debris in there "at all" !!! Tank was like new inside. But the old filter when on the floor, blew out Black thick "Sh*t" like Tar, when blown out away from arrow direction fuel direction. I think its the "modern" fuel mix that is building up in fuel filters?????
Had no idea when filter was last replaced.

very simple job if you take your time and the results can be dramatic with smoother tickover, engine note, quicker starting and engine pickup. (i recall someone saying fuel pump and fuel filter was a big draw on starter and starter electrics etc)

Good luck with your fault finding but just wanted to pass on my experience with 749S`s.

  11. Any news on this problem "Geemsee" ? Hope you have sorted your problem

  12. Still in progress, I eventually tracked it to a break in the wiring loom one one or more of the three wires that go to the front coil, discovered it when running the bike and twisting the wires, one position ok another firing on one cylinder with the eobd light on. Trouble is I couldnt find the break even after stripping the insulation tape off to where it spurs off the main loom and testing with a multimeter. After retaping it all back up i test rode and the problem had gone, but i dont trust it so im going to replace that part of the loom, bought a new bosch connector. The reason I havent done it yet is the clutch has also decided to wear out so im waiting on some new plates off ebay. Ahhh the joys of Ducati ownership!

  13. progress then..:)
