'Nelly' came highly recommended - and that was fully justified, I cannot fault his work and approach to helping such non-mechanics as myself! I will love the beast again when fixed.
Evening chrisw, I took a gander at the EXBV and yes its all still all original; very dry, but guess it will be on the exhaust; on start up the twin cables rotate/open or move the valve at least; but doesn't close it (or I didn't see it close?). Appreciate the suggestion and advice - one simple thing I could check!Cheers RR
Brought it out the shadows of shame at the weekend and the voltage is reading around 14.1v to 14.3v with approx 2k of revs - it had a new Yuasa battery fitted when serviced 320 miles ago (April time) and had not been on trickle charge for a while. It seemed to rev relatively ok in neutral but did sort of hiccup once, like it missed a beat??? After running it, I placed it on trickle charge, which took forever to fully charge (charger still on amber light after 10 hours, then I got bored and needed sleep. But no dash codes or warning lights thankfully in one sense. Thanks for the suggestions! RR
Thanks chrisw. On switching the ignition on, the exhaust valve did open and when revved up to 4-5k it didn't appear to move as I imagined, thought it may open and close more - it didn't close? But then I didn't give it much throttle as in the video? So may have another look this weekend and be more attentive? Also noticed the exhaust bracket has cracked on the weld! Will report back. Cheers RR
Well, I had another peek today and the valve moves on switching the ignition on, but after that, bugger all even with a good handful more revs and keeping the revs up high for a while. If the valve isn't opening it would explain the bogging effect of opening throttle. Is a new servo the answer or could there be other possible causes? Got a video but its too big to upload... TIA. RR.
Take the pulley off and grease the EXBV with copper slip. Rotate it to free it up. Add more copper slip and reassemble the pulley.
UPDATE - after a busy autumn, amongst other reasons, I finally transported the bike (by van) over to Nelly for diagnosis (no error codes). It was too unpredicatable and unsafe to ride there. Also, I didn't fancy waiting 6 hours again for the RAC to recover it as previously with the ZX6R! Long story short, after much head scratching and problem solving, he’s cracked it!! The cause of all the issues: the crank senor combined with the TPS sensor both mis-behaving and now replaced. So…. now really looking forward to putting some miles on her and a MASSIVE thankyou goes to Nelly for his perseverance, determination and excellent service!! Thoroughly recommended. And thank you to all who replied with suggestions - much appreciated.
It surely is - saved me looking for a big cliff (for the bike).... but being so far from the sea I'd have never got there!
Those same symptoms on my 999 on track: partially blocked fuel filter in the tank, think I'd had the same on my 996,
The fuel filter was the first part to be replaced - needed doing as it was still the original part - and it’s a 2008 bike! But frustratingly it made no noticeable difference. Wouldn't fancy tracking a bike behaving like mine did..... hope you cured your bikes?
I just read this thread for interest. All the comments about the exhaust valve seem arse about face to me. On my Hyper, the valve is fully open by default, closing a bit for its intended effect around 1/3 full revs. It looks like identical action on then 848 and, to me, this is clearly happening in the same way on his video, so it was never going to be the valve. Also, if the valve cycles open-closed-open as mine does, on 'key on' it's working as it should, otherwise it would not move if the prognosis is that it's stuck closed.
Sometimes it gets stuck closed. Normally feels like an mis fire. May be partially closed, as it kind won’t open all the way rather than be locked shut.
At the time, I would have tried most suggestions, within my limited mechanical capabilities, as it was bloody frustrating and defied logic. When posting technical issues on the forum, I was always going to get a wide range of 'solutions' but all done so in a genuine effort by members to help for which I am grateful. Always happy to listen and hopefully learn!
