Cheers for that. I'm not sure I want to go down that road at the moment. In my newbie post "Bonjour" I had said that I was interested in the ss range and also the ST range. However, I did have a 748 before my "move" over the water. A cracking bike which I really enjoyed. I'm after something a bit more long -legged ,I think , that can scratch a bit and tour (ST) and I also like the sort of retro feel of the ss range.
I am intending to go an look at a 1000ds ie over the next week or so. I am not a biking novice BUT can you tell me anything in particular to check on these bikes before an offer is made ? Anything that is particular to the 1000 or indeed the ss range that I should be aware of ? Thanks, conkers.
Always buy on condition, don't worry too much about the mileage, look for a bike which has had a fussy owner, matching newish tyres, lots of receipts and invoices, buy one that's been stored in a modern dry garage, not in a damp crappy shed, look at everything you can and prepare a checklist before you view the bike, if your instincts tell you it's not quite right, walk away.
leaks I've been advised by a seller of a 1000ds that a common problem with this model is that the tank leaks! He showed me where the tank has to be welded up .Is this bull or a fact? If accurate , how has everyone dealt with this potential nightmare ? :frown:
Not a common problem as far as I know, I have a 900SSie with same tank and was warned to be careful raising it on its hinge at the back as it can get stressed and split there.
it is a problem if they have badly stored in a damp garage without any fuel in the tank, most seem to be OK
Thanks guys. Interestingly the seller in question had shown me exactly where 900streetfighter had mentioned! He had welded and /or replaced a small section around the hinge. Quote "this is a common problem with these models - mostly all of them do it " unquote. It was a 2005 model too!!
Looking seriously at a senna grey ( 2003 ) 1000ds with 12500 on the clock. A few small scratches/ here and there and some areas of paint wearing thin like the passenger grap rail - but nothing I can't live with or work to correct. It has DP pots + originals and a load of receipts; 3 keys and keycard . It had a FULL service at 11250 at a Ducati dealer. I like the bike but don't understand why it has no "trumpets" on top of the air box. It has a complete top with two holes where the air scoops would be. It has a K&N filtre. Any comments please?
Some peeps remove the trumpets when fitting K+N. Debatable if it makes any difference to performance.
I have had a couple of the 900ssie`s and I took the trumpets out. Not sure if there was any performance benefit but it certainly made an improvement to the noise under acceleration, a lovely bark from the air intake without having to spend any money on a new exhaust system.
