IIRC those screws and the plate are to hold the bearing in, the shaft should push through the bearing from the outside but any crud in the splines on the output shaft may be stopping it going through.
The puller uses impact to remove (twatting it with a hammer after just nipping it up) and so the gear just gently falls off, there isn't space inside the tool to leave the nut on anyway. I've pulled a few with it (including both of ck_uk's) and it's an easy, drama free job. Your hydraulic puller must be a fair tool though because I've tried a conventional 2-legged puller and it wasn't doing anything, I reckon if I'd persisted it would have ended in tears...
I seem to have a problem separating the crankcases on one engine, it's just one area which won't budge (you can see the other side of the engine where the cases are coming apart willingly). I can't see what the problem is, so I'm guessing they have 'welded' together in one area. Would it be safe to try some heat?
There is a hollow steel locating bush in that engine bolt section of the engine (and one near the swingarm) to ensure it lines up properly, given that rain etc. can get inside the engine frame/engine bolt holes I would say that the bush/dowel has rusted inside the cases. Heat may help along with some 'gentle' persuasion...
Thanks, went to fire up my burner but the canister was empty..d'oh. Anyway I sprayed all round the area with WD40 and really tried but still won't budge. I'll get some more butane..
Not much of an offering at the moment, just a few pics of clutch cover refurb. I didn't go the blasting/powder route decided to use tin of elbow grease. Prepped, then primed with VHT primer then final coat of VHT enamel. The colour is "Cast Iron".
Well after deciding on the colour there seemed to be only one supplier, USA Automotive which are based in Bedford. Gotta say it seems like good quality.
Sorry to hijack, but does anyone know where best to source the green colour engine paint? As seen on the supermono
Thanks Duke600, I was about to ask the same I Like that "cast iron" though ck_uk, looks a bit like the late model engine casing colour.
Ok today's engine porn. Finally managed to split the casings on original (blown) engine. Took some assistance but the crank popped out which was the culprit making everything so much hard work. Next stage bag everything up ready for rebuild. One question - should there be any lateral play whatsoever in the crank arms (third photo)? You can see there's about 1mm gap on the right hand side.
Back on the case with this job again (it's been a while). Just to confirm from what was said previously, the shaft here should just push through from the outside? How can I do this - I'm not sure hammer blows are the correct method..
IIRC the only thing holding it is the fit in the bearing, so likely corrosion? You could always fish the oil seal out to see what's going on, you'll want a new one anyway along with the bearing. Mine came out with very little bother, don't remember if I actually needed the hammer but if so only it was only a few soft blows with a plastic/alloy jobbie
God almighty, I finally managed to hammer the gear shaft out. Took some effort but got there in the end. Rusty coloured spline. Now I really need some advice on what to do with the engine casing - 1. Clean up by hand then spray/paint to refinish. 2. Have it blasted and spray/paint to refinish. 3. Have it blasted and coated professionally. Will I need to remove all the various bearings etc and replace them, regardless of method used?
