998 998 Suspension Set Up

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Cream_Revenge, Oct 26, 2015.

  1. I've got the cone for the bottom. Just unsure about the top bit.

  2. Top or bottom of the arm. I only use it measure how much up or down I need back end to go, so as long as I measure to same point its all good.

  3. Fricken awesome... Very useful, thanks CR!

Was searching for the "default 998 settings", but will get my head around this article and test them out.

  4. I suspect this is stock set up? - stem position in head stock i.e. angle of forks

    20160627_195838.jpg

This must provide the most rake / steering angle where as turning the stem towards the front of the bike (in the head stock) would make the forks more vertical, wheel base shorter and faster steering - for track use.

I am trying to get my bike to stock and work from there, once it is back together I will take it to get set up for my weight.

I will have a few questions answers appreciated.

  5. Not sure from the photo but if the eccentric's been setup for race, you won't be able to use the steering lock, I think...

  6. Also the front tyre: pirelli diablo corsa 3 any good? I will probably change to race tec when these are had it.

At 120/70/17 the profile looks quite tall, almost like a wider tyre fitted to a narrower rim? is this the norm.

I have a overly sensitive front end issue, it fells like the bike wants to drop in at low speeds and like it may get out of control when only riding at modest speeds... I've not owned the bike so I will work through as I go.

  7. Hayden said that at the BBQ and it makes sense referring to the above, at the stem moves forward it would clear the lock on the top yoke..

My steering lock works in this postion and common sense tells me, this is as far back as it can be... hence more chopper style, so is stock

  8. I had that issue with the bike too. There were 5 rings showing above the top yoke when I bought the bike. I lowered it to 3 rings showing IIRC and the difference that made was massive. It felt a lot more sturdy after...

  9. This bike has loads of paperwork for all sorts of work, including suspension alterations so...

I now have a beautiful set of stock ultra low mileage, ohlins 998s FE/R forks..
saves me stripping the Showa to see if they have been resprung or revalved.

    Last questions.

Rear height is best at 245mm? using a tool.

The Front Forks though the yokes for Ohlins by how much?

I normal measure forks with a vernier from the top of the yoke to the top of the fork like this - my ocd diagrams (R6)
    R6.jpg
The Ducati measurement is some way of measuring off the bottom yoke. Could anyone advise? is 3 rings showing the norm for the Ohlins too?

  10. Correct. That's what it says in the manuel.

  11. From the photos I've seen, the ohlins seem to be lower than most people have the showas set at. Don't know but hopefully tomorrow or the day after I'll be fitting a set of öhlins forks on mine too. So would also like to see what other people say about it.
As for the rear ride height, mine's set at about 245mm using the ride height tool. On my shock this is the minimum as the shock has been set up differently. (Shop cocked up unfortunately)

  12. If I don't get a reply re the ohlins.. I see on page 1 of this post Cream Revenge said the showa are 4 rings showing.
I will compare the lengths of both forks (from the wheel spindle to the top, measure the increments of the marks) and make an educated guess... I will post a photo to confirm before I put the body work back on.

  13. Bettes can I take you up on that offer?.. I will PM you an address.

Next week the 998 should be all built up.
Having had a recent visit from Cream Revenge (thank you) to look at some set up..
The back end definitely appears to have been raised at some point.

  14. Would those three rings be taken from the centre of the yolk point of view.. Eg:

  17. Sorry, no. Just re read your post. Taken from the inside part of the yoke. Where the 2 fork legs are closest.

  18. Yeah sorry that's what I ment.. So the photo is of stock position

  19. Ive not got a rear ride height tool... but at a quick measure the "Ride Height Adjuster" looks to be about 265mm center to center. Anyone know what the factory setting length is?

Also, with the rear shock... "Active thread wound down" .... WTF....
Is this the distance between the mount casing and the top of the lockring?
